Skiing with Kids: Why Play is the Key to Confidence

Skiing with Kids: Why Play is the Key to Confidence

Born for Adventure Podcast Ep. 2 Recap

If you’ve ever tried teaching a child to ski, you know the struggle—cold fingers, frustration, and a meltdown or two before even getting to the lift. But what if we told you the secret to teaching kids to ski isn’t about drills or perfect form… but about play?

In Episode 2 of the Born for Adventure Podcast, we’re diving into ski-based play—the best way to help kids build confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love for skiing.

Skiing Should Feel Like Play, Not Pressure

Many parents worry about when their kids will learn to ski, whether they’ll pick up good habits, and if they’ll be “good enough.” While it's easy to get caught up in the pressure, both Michaela and I are guilty of this—there’s no rush to hit milestones. Instead, the key to keeping kids excited and engaged is making it fun.

“Skiing is like learning to walk—you don’t force it, you just encourage them to explore,” says co-host Michael Friedberg.

So how do we take the pressure off and turn skiing into play?

🏔️ 3 Ways to Keep Skiing Fun for Kids:

Let them lead – Instead of dictating every turn, let kids explore safe areas at their own pace. Ask them to pick the next run or “lead the adventure.”

Make it a game – Play follow-the-favorite stuffed animal. We love how Michael uses a stuffy to get Darwin to follow him and make her turns!

Gear up for comfort – Cold, wet kids = unhappy skiers. Dressing them in high-quality Merino wool layers keeps them warm, dry, and ready for more laps. (Psst—check out our Iksplor Merino base layers for the whole family!)
